Kalimuendo Fires as Forest Secure Nostalgic Triumph Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed around the ground as Nottingham Forest supporters reveled in a further win against Malmö. A great deal has happened since Francis's decisive header clinched the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but Forest still cherish those glorious moments. Similarly, significant shifts have taken place in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest looking refreshed and securing a comfortable victory courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of advancing in the European competition.

Gaining Steam with Third Straight Win

For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had not played for nearly a month after ending in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third consecutive win across all competitions and added to the momentum generated from last weekend’s success at Anfield. While this match was a re-run of the club's historic success in name, the encounter itself was free of any real jeopardy or jitters.

This was an occasion filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive meeting between the teams since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

The home side leaned into the heritage, honoring the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from then were also present. Both teams shared a meal together before the match. Forest legends and their teammates were given a tumultuous reception when they assembled on the pitch 15 minutes before kick-off, and a characteristically impressive tifo was shown in the Trent End.

Remembering the Past

“30th May 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read half of a giant banner, in block capitals. While nobody required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was revealed as the squads came out from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second stunning display depicted Clough observing events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Start

So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was pretty good, too. They were in full command from the moment the forward fired an attempt off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 advantage by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who came to the club as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defence captained by their own academy product skipper, Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford FC. The home centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a opponent and into the path of Yates, who swept home with his right foot from just inside the penalty area to register his first goal since last March.

Another Goal Confirms Dominance

Yates was involved in the team's second goal on the verge of half-time, too, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to convert the loose ball from point-blank range. James McAtee, the playmaker handed a rare start and only his second appearance since the autumn, was the catalyst, lofting a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was turned aside off Malmö defender Rösler, son of former Man City forward Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic had earlier had a powerful header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who returned in place of the ex- Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Opponent's Struggles

This was the Swedish side's initial game since the domestic league ended on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal the home team's energy. The Reds extended the lead to three when the defender applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a corner. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

The home side then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a effort on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot wide from distance. It was that kind of nights. Dyche, mindful of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented seven changes from the side that surprised the Reds at Anfield last weekend, when they also scored three times, though he called on substitutes and further fresh legs midway through the second half.

Smooth Night for Forest

It proved a flawless night for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could withdraw Murillo with the match already boxed off and subsequently brought on 19-year-old defender Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche discussed the Forest old guard supplying “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad showed they are able of producing of excitement, as well.
